Who are the Q'ero Shamans?

THE Q'ERO COMMUNITY

The Q'ero are a Quechua-speaking indigenous community residing in the high Andes of Peru, particularly in the Paucartambo province of the Cusco Region. Their remote and rugged homeland has enabled them to preserve ancient traditions and spiritual practices, positioning them as esteemed keepers of Andean shamanic wisdom.

Spiritual Practices and Beliefs

Central to Q'ero spirituality is the concept of ayni, or reciprocity, which emphasizes living in harmony with nature and maintaining balanced relationships within the community. They perceive the divine in all aspects of the natural world, engaging in rituals that honor mountains (Apus), rivers, and other natural elements. This deep connection fosters a holistic worldview where humans are integral to the cosmic order.

Shamanic Roles

Q'ero shamans, known as paqos, serve as intermediaries between the physical and spiritual realms. There are two primary shamanic paths within their tradition:

• Pampamesayoq: Earth healers who may specialize in various functions, such as coca leaf reading, pulse reading, or other specific healing practices.

• Altomesayoq: Shamans believed to be chosen by the mountains, often through the transformative experience of surviving lightning strikes. They are considered to have a profound connection with higher spiritual realms.
